Communication support that is practical and personalised

How can a speech pathologist help?

Speech pathology is about much more than pronunciation. Speech pathologists support the many skills people use to understand others, express themselves, participate in learning and relationships, communicate confidently and, where relevant, eat and swallow safely.

For children, speech pathology may help when speech, language, literacy or social communication skills are developing differently or causing frustration at home or school. For teens and adults, support may focus on communication, fluency, voice, language, literacy or swallowing difficulties.

At Integrated Wellness Clinic, we take a warm, practical and individualised approach. Therapy goals are tailored to the person, their stage of life and the communication skills that matter most in everyday life.

Speech pathology may support difficulties with:

  • Developmental speech delay
  • Speech clarity and pronunciation
  • Understanding spoken language
  • Expressing thoughts and ideas
  • Listening and following instructions
  • Reading and writing
  • Social communication
  • Stuttering and fluency
  • Voice and vocal communication
  • Swallowing difficulties

Why speech pathology can make a difference

Benefits can reach far beyond speech itself

Communication skills influence learning, confidence, relationships, participation and independence. Supporting these skills can make everyday situations easier and less frustrating.

Greater communication confidence

Being better understood and having strategies to express needs, ideas and feelings can support confidence in everyday interactions.

Support for learning

Language, listening, phonological awareness, reading and writing skills are closely connected with participation in school and learning.

Less frustration

Communication difficulties can be tiring and frustrating. Practical support may make it easier to understand others and be understood.

Stronger participation

Communication support can help people participate more comfortably at home, school, work and in the community.

Individual strategies

Therapy can focus on practical strategies that fit the person rather than expecting every child or adult to communicate in the same way.

Support for families

Parents and families can gain a clearer understanding of how to support communication skills between appointments and in everyday routines.

A family-run clinic

Why speech pathology is personal to me

Hi, I’m Suzi Le Fanue, co-founder of Integrated Wellness Clinic. Having been through speech pathology with my own son, I understand how important it is for families to feel welcomed, listened to and supported with practical care.

That experience helped shape the warm, down-to-earth speech pathology service we offer today. I’m not the treating speech pathologist; my role is to help create the kind of clinic experience I would want for my own family.

What to expect

A practical, individualised approach to speech therapy

The exact process depends on age, goals and the reason for referral, but care generally begins by understanding the person’s strengths, concerns and everyday communication needs.

Initial consultation

We begin by discussing the concerns, relevant history, current strengths and the situations where communication or swallowing difficulties are having the greatest impact.

2

Assessment where needed

Your speech pathologist may use observation, conversation, activities and formal assessment tools where appropriate to build a clearer understanding of current skills.

3

Personalised therapy

Therapy goals and strategies are tailored to the individual and designed to be practical, achievable and relevant to everyday life.
